Before we get into the drinking questions: there’s a rumor your band is named after a character in Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure – any truth behind this?
Heather D’Angelo: This is indeed true! We’re named after the waitress named Simone in that movie. Pee Wee yells goodbye to her in French as she pulls away from the bus station.
Ha. Ha. That’s awesome. Not only do Au Revoir Simone make undeniably enjoyable indie-rock-pop, judging from the Flickr pics with fellow Brookylnites We Are Scientists you’re also able to hold your own in the drinking arena. Do you have any fun drinking stories from that tour?
HD: That whole tour was one long blur of drinking too much and dancing all night, and Keith was constantly playing spinto dice. And there was a bar fight and some blood. I wish I could remember some good stories.
Erika Forster: The nights that we rode on the tour bus with We Are Scientists and their crew were the best because the party didn’t have to stop until we all fell asleep.
Annie Hart: Yes, you can see a YouTube video of some of our shenanigans if you look hard enough. That was some of the best time of my entire life.
All right, so, what do you all like to drink?
HD: A dear friend of mine got me into Jack and Cokes a long time ago. I never used to know what to order, so I would just get what he was drinking. There was something nice about ordering the same drink and then hiding out in a dark corner of a bar and getting wasted while having long, inane conversations. Now I order them regardless of who I’m hanging out with ‘cause the taste always reminds me of good times.
EF: I like sake. It seems pure.
AH: Give me a greyhound any day, so much like lemonade but less sweet.
Tell me about some alcohol that has destroyed you in the past and you can’t touch now.
HD: One New Years Eve I drank about two bottles of champagne and became more intoxicated than I’ve ever been before in my life. I threw up at the party and had to be carried like a baby all the way home, where I proceeded to throw up even more. It’s amazing that I didn’t die of alcohol poisoning that night. Since then, champagne has lost a lot of its appeal. I have a similar story that involves tequila.
EF: I love red wine but it makes me sneeze and gives me very red cheeks the next morning.
AH: Whiskey and Scotch make me retch, and one time when I was 18 I downed a small glass and immediately threw it up in the bathroom right outside of the boss’ office.
Which band member holds their alcohol the best?
HD: Hmmm…well, Erika never seems to drink as much as Annie and I so it’s hard to judge what her tolerance is. And the two of us get pretty ridiculous fairly quickly. So, the answer is: no one.
Okay then, which band member holds their alcohol the worst?
HD: Again, I think it’s down to Annie and I…and it’s a close race to see which one of us will be the first to dance on a table.
AH: I’ll dance on a table, no problem, sober, so you can imagine what I’m like when I drink.
If there was an alcoholic drink called “Au Revoir Simone” how would I make one, what would the ingredients be?
HD: It would probably involve fresh squeezed, organic fruit or vegetable juice and have a celery stick floating in it. It would get you drunk slowly but would also be really good for you. We’re that kind of band.
EF: Perhaps one of the ingredients would be parfait amour, which I tasted once in
AH: I have to go with Heather’s answer on this one. Definitely organic and made with a healthy liquor. Maybe even grapefruit and sake.
This month you’re releasing The Bird of Music, the follow up to 2005’s Verses of Comfort, Assurance, and Salvation. Are you planning any sort of tour or anything to celebrate the release?
HD: We’re touring around Europe and the
Excellent. Aside from the new album, what are you excited about in 2007?
HD: Touring…that’s pretty much all I’m doing this year.
EF: I’m excited about touring to new places and especially about playing festivals in the summer.
AH: World peace and touring.
Okay, that about does it. Are there any other more fun stories, tales, words of wisdom, imparting gifts you’d like to share before we conclude?
HD: Do whatever you want whenever you want and you will succeed. And always be nice to people.
EF: Don’t be afraid of anything.
AH: Look for the best in everyone.
And finally, the most important question of all, which are better: pirates, ninjas, or Vikings?
HD: We often get asked this question, and I stand by my previous answer. It depends on the day, and today, I say Vikings.
EF: I’m for non-violence, but if I have to choose, ninjas.
AH: Ninja. I get seasick.

Heather D’angelo's lament on Jack and Coke is probably the truest and most awesome thing I've ever read.
it's one thing to want to keep an interview light and unpretentious but another to drag on a bubbly, pointless conversation with ladies that don't really have that much to say. stick to singing- the rest is pop rocks.
Where is Erika touring?
